Die nächste Verpflichtung kommt aus der englischen Championship nach Darmstadt. Christoph Zimmermann führte die Ostengländer als Kapitän in die Premier League, wurde in den letzten Jahren aber immer wieder von Verletzungen ausgebremst. So brachte es der 29-Jährige in fünf Spielzeiten auf „lediglich“ 20 Einsätze im englischen Oberhaus und auf über 100 Partien in Englands 2. Liga. Ich befrage Dan O’Hagan zum gebürtigen Düsseldorfer, der noch auf seinen ersten Einsatz in der 2. Bundesliga wartet. Dan berichtet aktuell als internationaler Fußballkommentator über die Bundesliga und berichtete früher für die Premier League über Norwich City. Dan, Darmstadt 98 have signed Christoph Zimmermann. His departure from Norwich, however, had been on the cards for some time. Am I right? In any case, his value for the club no longer seemed particularly high.
Certainly, even under Daniel Farke, Zimmermann’s value to the team had diminished, at least as a regular starting player, but behind the scenes he remained a very important member of the dressing room and a huge favourite with the Norwich fans. It can be argued he was extremely unlucky with injuries – no doubt he would have played many more Premier League games in the 2019/20 season and perhaps even in 2021/22 had he been fit and available. He leaves the club hugely admired, as a genuine club legend. Part of two promotion seasons and one of the last players at the club from the cherished “Farkeball” era. It’s true to say he fell in love with Norwich, and the Norfolk area, and vice-versa.

Zimmermann had been struggling with injuries for the last few years and gradually dropped out of the starting eleven. What can you say about the nature of his injuries and am I doing him an injustice by calling him an injury-prone player?
It was an ankle injury – the result of a bad challenge – in the Premier League game at West Ham in September 2019 which was the beginning of the end for “Zimbo” as a first choice player at Norwich. After that he never seemed to catch a run of sustained fitness, often ruled out with unspecified muscular pulls and strains. It’s probably unfair to label him “injury prone”, more a player who has been unfortunate to pick up injuries just when he seemed ready for a long run back in the first team.

Is he now fit to play again and can he help Darmstadt straight away? Or will he still need time in terms of fitness?
He’s played some minutes in Norwich’s current pre-season, but it has been clear that he was never going to be coach Dean Smith’s preferred choice at centre-back, with senior players Ben Gibson and Grant Hanley clearly more trusted alongside the enormous rising talent of Andrew Omabamidele. There’s no reason that he won’t be fit and ready to slot straight into the team at Darmstadt as his fitness levels will be good – Norwich’s first pre-season sessions were over three weeks ago, and they’ve been playing friendly matches since 1 July.

Zimmermann played for Norwich for a total of five years. What image of him will remain with the fans or with you?
The fans will remember him as a legendary player, an icon of an incredible era. What Daniel Farke (along with Sporting Director Stuart Webber) achieved at the club cannot be underestimated, and will never be forgotten. Zimmermann definitely had a unique connection with the fans and with the wider Norfolk area, visible and involved with the local community. He even went as far as delivering a lecture to students at the city’s university. I fully expect, at some point in the future, to see him inducted into the club’s Hall Of Fame.

Zimmermann was captain at Norwich for some time. What does that tell one about him?
It says that he is a natural leader. It’s incredible that he’s only 29 years of age. He has had a remarkable maturity and calmness about him ever since he arrived at Norwich. From a very early point in his Norwich career it was clear that he’d won the trust of his team-mates and the fans. Arguably he was the first of the Farke/Webber German signings to really settle at the club. For example it took Marco Stiepermann a full season before he began to show his best form. With Zimmermann, he delivered strong performances right from the start.

What do you see as his strengths in the game and what can a team expect from him?
He’s a very calm, authoritative defender. He loves to initiate attacks, stepping forward from the defensive line. His leadership qualities are obvious, and he comes to Darmstadt as a proven winner – part of two EFL Championship winning squads and a player who did not look entirely out of place at Premier League level.

In which situations does he reveal weaknesses for you?
His fitness will be a concern. He needs to prove that it has just been bad luck he has had with injuries and not an underlying weakness. Also his threat at set pieces isn’t as convincing as it could be – just three league goals in five seasons at Norwich, and no goal since April 2019.

Did Norwich prefer to play with a three-man or a four-man backline? And what part did he play in those?
In Zimmermann’s first season, in which Norwich struggled in mid-table, Farke switched between a conventional four man defensive line, and a three man unit. The team looked a lot more confident playing with a back four, but of the defenders Norwich had, Zimmermann was perhaps the one who looked most comfortable when they did play with three defenders. Arguably, a three-man system is what Zimmermann is best suited to, and Norwich’s near-total switch to a back four over the past three seasons might help to explain why, even when fit, he found starts and minutes hard to come by.

A year ago, another German centre-back, Julian Börner, returned to the 2nd Bundesliga from Championship club Sheffield Wednesday. The kicker placed him in 6th position in the season rankings just behind Patric Pfeiffer, who played an outstanding season with us. Do you think Zimmermann might be as convincing as Börner?
I think every Norwich fan wishes “Zimbo” a very successful return to Germany. Darmstadt will be a club Canaries fans will now look out for to see how Zimmermann gets on, in the same way they follow Dennis Srbeny’s form since he moved back to Paderborn. If he can stay fit for a sustained period, Darmstadt will have acquired an excellent, cultured, intelligent, influential player, who can be incredibly proud of what he achieved in England, and the role he played in a period in Norwich City’s history that fans will still be talking of 50 or 100 years from now.

• Dan glaubt, dass Zimmermann in Norwich als Ikone einer unglaublichen Ära erinnert werden wird. Er hat eine einzigartige Verbindung zu den Fans hergestellt. Er hat sich in der Gemeinde engagiert und sogar an der Uni eine Vorlesung für die Studierenden gehalten. Dan geht fest davon aus, dass Zimmermann einmal in die Hall of Fame des Vereins aufgenommen wird.
• Zimmermann war einige Zeit Kapitän in Norwich. Dan führt dies auf seine natürliche Führungsqualitäten zurück. Er ist bemerkenswert reif und ruhig, sodass es Dan genau genommen überrascht, dass er tatsächlich erst 29 ist. Zimmermann gewann in Norwich sehr schnell das Vertrauen von Mitspielern und Fans. Er zeigte von Anfang an starke Leistungen und lebte sich in Norwich selbst auch richtig ein.

• Zu den Schwächen zählt er seine Verletzungshistorie. Zimmermann müsse zeigen, dass er nur Verletzungspech hatte und kein tieferliegenden Probleme. Darüber hinaus ist er nicht unbedingt torgefährlich.
• Bei Norwich spielte Zimmermann in einer Dreier- und Viererkette. Ben hatte den Eindruck, dass sich Zimmermann von allen Abwehrspielern in einer Dreierkette (als rechter oder zentraler Verteidiger) am wohlsten fühlte. Dass Norwich nun seit geraumer Zeit wieder mit Viererkette spielt, könnte erklären, warum Zimmermann auch dann nur selten spielte, wenn er fit war.
• Die Norwich-Fans werden laut Dan nun ein Auge auf Darmstadt haben, um zu sehen, wie sich Zimmermann entwickelt. Ähnlich ist es bei Ex-Norwich-Spieler Dennis Srbeny seit dessen Rückkehr nach Paderborn. Dan meint, wenn Zimmermann über längere Zeit fit bleibt, dann verfügt Darmstadt über einen exzellenten, kultivierten, intelligenten und Einfluss nehmenden Spieler.
