Nach Bum-Kun Cha 1978 und Dong-Won Ji 2018 zieht es nun mit Seung-ho Paik einen weiteren Südkoreaner ans Böllenfalltor. Während Cha bei den Lilien seine in Korea bereits erfolgreiche Karriere in die Bundesliga überführte, kommt Paik noch ohne große Meriten über Spanien nach Darmstadt. Als 13-Jähriger wechselte er 2010 nach Barcelona und wurde dort in der Kaderschmiede der Katalanen ausgebildet. 2017 wechselte er nach einer für ihn erfolgreichen U20-WM zum FC Girona. Dort spielte er überwiegend für deren Reserveteam CF Peralda in der 3. Liga. In der vergangenen Rückrunde stand er immerhin in zehn Ligapartien im Kader des späteren Erstligaabsteigers, in drei Partien wurde er eingewechselt. Daneben sammelte er in drei Pokalpartien Spielpraxis, unter anderem im Viertelfinalhin- und rückspiel gegen Real Madrid. Gestern hat er sein zweites Länderspiel für Südkoreas A-Team bestritten. Ab sofort geht es für den 22-jährigen Mittelfeldspieler (Vertrag bis 2022) darum, seinen prominenten Landsleute Cha und Ji nachzueifern. Ich befragte den koreanischen Journalisten Steve Han (u.a. bei goal.com) zu Paik.

Steve, what kind of player is Seung-ho Paik?
To put it simply, I’d say Paik is a versatile midfielder with a wide range of skills. His biggest strength is his ability to retain possession by shielding it impressively in tight spaces in the congested middle third of the pitch. Paik is also known for his ability to distribute outlet passes from deep, but he hasn’t yet developed an ability to deliver that final pass to create goalscoring opportunities.

From the 2nd Bundesliga we know in particular Jae-Sung Lee (Holstein Kiel) and Chung-Yong Lee (VfL Bochum). Both hit immediately last year. Do you trust Paik to do the same, or will he need his start-up time? After all, he has mainly gained experience in third-league football in Spain so far.
You’re right and I’d be surprised to see him become an „impact player“ immediately. Keep in mind, Paik is not a player with a wealth of first team experience even for a 22-year-old. In Korea, the expectation was for him to start playing first team football at Girona as the 2017/18 season progressed, but that didn’t happen until the latter stage of last season. Even then, he never really got close to earning regular playing time with the first team there. Lee Jae-sung and Lee Chung-yong are two of the most experienced Korean footballers at the moment, and it wasn’t a surprise for them to produce high-level performances from the start at their respective clubs in Germany. Paik is still of a mystery, to be completely honest, as he hasn’t yet played much first team football in his career.

The 2nd Bundesliga is an enormously physical league. His opponents won’t allow him much time on the ball here and will tackle him in case of doubt. Carsten Wehlmann, sports director of the Lilien, said that Paik was strong in direct duels. Do you agree?
That comment by Wehlmann was a bit of a curious statement, at least in my opinion. Paik had an interview with the Korean media in Istanbul this week and he specifically mentioned that the physical part of his game is an area he’s still trying to improve through weight training and conditioning work. Now, it’s obviously possible that Wehlmann may have seen something that I haven’t, but I personally wouldn’t say that he’s a ball-winning midfielder. He may be a player who’s adept at retaining possession when he has the ball, but dispossessing the opposition is obviously is a completely different skill.

What are his strengths in general and where does he need to improve?
2.Bundesliga games are often played at high tempo, or at least that was my observation based on what I’ve seen of Holstein Kiel, Hamburg and Bochum last season. Paik hasn’t yet played as a regular first teamer who consistently starts and plays 90 minutes. Conditioning (stamina) and being able to keep pace with the tempo of first team football would be his biggest challenge at Darmstadt. Based on what I’ve seen of him, he doesn’t strike me as a player with high energy level. He seems more of a player who likes to get on the ball to dictate plays at his own pace and tempo.

What’s his favourite position?
I often joke with my colleagues and friends that Paik is „positionally awkward player,“ mainly because he hasn’t yet solidified himself in one particular position. However, that means as well that he can cover several positions. When he first joined La Masia at a young age, I believe he started out as a deep-lying midfielder in the mould of Sergio Busquets, but after returning from the FIFA ban in 2016, he played most of his remaining time at Barcelona Juvenil A as a winger. After signing a B team contract with Girona in the 2017/18 season, he continued to primarily play as a winger for Peralada (Girona’s B team in the Spanish third division), but eventually worked his way back into playing deeper in midfield last season (2018/19). He made occasional appearances for Girona’s first team as more of an advanced midfielder in a No. 10 role.
It may be worth noting that Paik actually played as a false nine for Peralada on a number of occasions.

Paik lived in Spain for nine years. Now he’s coming to a foreign country and Darmstadt is a club that’s just about to professionalise after many years in third and fourth class. Aren’t adaptation difficulties inevitable?
A few days ago he told the press that many of the people at the club and even some of his teammates speak English, so communicating with them was easier than he had initially expected. He also mentioned that one of the goalkeepers at Darmstadt speaks Spanish, so I guess that helps as well. He also said that he had already gone out to dinner with a few teammates when he visited the club last week, but in terms of having to adjust to a new lifestyle and culture, you’re definitely right. He’d have to make some major adjustments, which will be interesting to see, as he has played most of his career in Catalonia.

How did he get involved with Barca at all and why did he have to take a ban there from 2013 to 2016?
He was born and raised in Suwon, a town that’s famous for producing some top quality Korean footballers, including Park Ji-sung, who is obviously a legend in Korea. Paik’s former Barcelona teammate Lee Seung-woo was also born and raised there. They both played their youth football in Suwon and were spotted by a Barca scout (at different times). As for the ban, it was because Barcelona were found guilty of violating the FIFA regulations that prohibit clubs from signing underage, foreign players purely for football reasons.

He certainly impressed at the U20 World Cup in South Korea two years ago. There he scored two goals and played with his team among others against players who play in Germany today like Jonjoe Kenny (Schalke 04), Ademola Lookman (RB Leipzig) and Santiago Ascacibar (VfB Stuttgart). Where do you rate him among the promising South Korean talents, many of whom already playing in Europe?
I’d say Paik is at crossroads at the moment between establishing himself as a fully professional player or gradually becoming one of many players who never lived up to the expectations. The expectations of him in Korea is actually quite high, but I’d warn you that it’d be dangerous to assess his potential based on how he’s rated by the general public in Korea. Most Koreans have hardly seen Paik play at senior level, as the Spanish third division is not televised in Korea. The hype was more or less built on the fact that he was developed by Barcelona’s youth academy and glimpses of promise he showed at U-20 level and also in his international debut in June against Iran at home.

He won his first cap for South Korea in June and was in the starting eleven against Iran. How did he perform on his debut?
His performance against Iran was quite impressive. Paulo Bento was criticized heavily for calling him up for the March friendlies, only to not play him against Bolivia and Colombia. He was called up again in June, and missed the first game against Australia, which drew even more criticism on Bento, but it turns out, Paik told the media after the Iran game that Bento had actually instructed him to observe the Australia game from the bench to gain a better understanding of the deep-lying midfield (No. 6) as the plan all along was to play him against Iran after enough training sessions and observations of senior players under his belt before making his international debut.

What can you say about Paik’s character?
Seems to be a really humble and also media-friendly player. We’ve reached out to him quite a few times at Goal Korea while he was still with Girona, and he has been great. It also stood out for me that he told the media this week that he has already „forgotten“ about the Barcelona label that seems to follow him everywhere he goes and that he considers himself as a player who genuinely has to stay humble to put in the work every day in training to establish himself in the world of professional football.

Last question: Do you know why Paik chose to join Darmstadt? A club that hasn’t attracted attention by offering foreign talents a springboard so far. In addition his agency is mainly focussing on the Spanish market.
His agent situation is a bit strange from the way we see it in Korea. He’s obviously represented by an agency in Spain, but the agent who’s in direct contact with him is Korean. According to his Korean agent, Paik received several offers from clubs in France as well, but it’s difficult to judge how serious those talks were. I’m purely speculating on my end, but it seems to me like his camp tried to drag this out as long as possible until the end of the transfer deadline to consider as many offers as possible. Darmstadt probably offered him the best environment to continue to develop, as playing first team football is (or at least should be) his top priority.

Auf Einsätze für Girona kam er allerdings erst in der vergangenen Rückrunde, wenngleich wenige.

Die 2. Bundesliga ist eine enorm physische Liga. Ein Problem für Paik?
Steve findet Sportdirektor Wehlmanns Aussage, Paik sei ein zweikampfstarker Spieler etwas seltsam. Umso mehr als Paik vor dem Länderspiel in dieser Woche gegenüber den Medien gesagt hat, er müsse physisch noch stärker werden. Steve sieht Paik weniger als Balleroberer, denn als Spieler, der den Ball in seinen Reihen halten kann.

Wo liegen seine Stärken, wo muss er sich noch verbessern?
Seine Ausdauer und das höhere Tempo in der 2. Bundesliga dürften für Paik zu Herausforderungen werden. Er fordert hingegen gern den Ball und nimmt so Einfluss auf Spiel und Tempo.

Auf welcher Position ist er am besten aufgehoben?
Er ist vielseitig einsetzbar, hat seine Position aber noch nicht so recht gefunden. In der Jugend beim FC Barcelona spielte er zunächst im defensiven Mittelfeld, später auf den Flügeln. Auch in der 3. Liga tat er dies zunächst, spielte ab und an auch als falsche Neun, bevor er wieder ins Zentrum zurückversetzt wurde. In seinen wenigen Einsätzen für Girona übernahm er dann sogar die 10er-Position.

Sind Anpassungsschwierigkeiten nicht vorprogrammiert?
Paik erzählte in dieser Woche den Medien, dass er sich mit einigen Teamkollegen in Darmstadt auf Englisch verständigt habe und ein Torwart sogar Spanisch spreche. Er sei auch schon mit ein paar Mitspielern Abendessen gewesen. Aber natürlich wird der Wechsel nach neun Jahren in Katalonien größere Umstellungen für ihn mit sich bringen.

Wie kam es überhaupt zum Wechsel nach Barcelona und warum wurde er dort gesperrt?
Seine Heimatregion Suwon hat schon einige Topfußballer (z.B. Park Ji-sung) hervorgebracht. Er und ein weiterer Nachwuchsspieler wurden dort von einem Barca-Scout entdeckt. Er wurde dann später in der Jugend gesperrt, da Barca gegen FIFA-Regeln verstoßen hatte, die es Klubs verbieten, minderjährige Spieler aus rein fußballerischen Gründen zu verpflichten.

Wo ist er unter den südkoreanischen Talenten einzuordnen, von denen inzwischen sehr viele den Sprung nach Europa gewagt haben?
Für Steve steht Paik an einem Scheideweg: Wird er sich als Vollprofi etablieren oder zu einem der vielen Spieler werden, die den Erwartungen nie gerecht wurden? In Korea waren und sind die Erwartungen an ihn ziemlich hoch. Dabei haben viele ihn bislang kaum im Profifußball spielen sehen. Der Hype um ihn in seinem Heimatland basiert auf der Tatsache, dass er bei Barca ausgebildet wurde und auf den positiven Eindrücken, die er bei der U20-WM in Südkorea hinterlassen hat.

Er hat im Juni sein erstes A-Länderspiel absolviert und stand dabei gegen den Iran gleich in der Startelf. Wie hatte er sich bei der Premiere geschlagen?
Beeindruckend und vielversprechend. Nationalcoach Paulo Bento musste sich viel Kritik anhören, dass er Paik zunächst bei drei Länderspielen nur nominierte, aber nicht spielen ließ. Paik sagte den Medien nach seinem Länderspieldebüt, dass ihn Bento angewiesen habe, die Spiele zunächst von der Bank zu beobachten, um ein besseres Verständnis für das Spiel des defensiven Mittelfelds zu erlangen.

Der Charakter von Paik?
Er scheint ein bescheidener Mensch zu sein, der gegenüber den Medien freundlich agiert. Im direkten Kontakt war er für Steve großartig. Paik selbst hat geäußert, dass er das Barca-Label ablegen und bescheiden bleiben will. Er will sich beständig im Training verbessern.

Warum verschlägt es Paik mit seiner Vita ausgerechnet nach Darmstadt?
Er wird von einer spanischen Agentur vertreten, dort aber von einem Koreaner. Dieser sagte, Paik habe auch mehrere Angebote von Klubs auf Frankreich erhalten. Steve kann nicht beurteilen, wie ernsthaft diese waren. Steve spekuliert, dass bewusst bis zum Ende der Transferperiode gewartet wurde, um so viele Angebote wie möglich vergleichen zu können. Womöglich bot ihm Darmstadt das beste Umfeld, um sich weiterzuentwickeln. Denn seine Priorität muss nun darauf liegen, in einem höherklassigen Profiteam zu spielen.
